Former Australian Prime Minister hands in his dinner pail

About 40 years too late, apparently. Hal G.P. Colebatch remembers the late Edward Gough Whitlam – and not at all fondly. A small sample from a much longer indictment:
When Saigon fell in April 1975, Whitlam directed the Royal Australian Air Force not to evacuate Vietnamese who had worked for the Australians and whose lives were at risk. Huge Hercules transport aircraft flew out of Saigon and Da Nang empty. He even frustrated U.S. attempts to get them out.
Fellow sounds like the most frightful left wing ass.

Yes he wanted to be hailed as a saviour and found his chance by adopting Pierre Trudeau's policies, without Trudeau's acumen.

So Gough was an imitator and became angry when the world didn't fit his fashionable dogma. His hostility to Vietnamese and other anti-communists who refused to fit his narrow views was despicable.

Have a look at the Norman Gunston video on Tim's post though. Hilarious, but shows how innocent Australia used to be.

When I came of age, the first time I voted, Gough was standing outside my polling place asking us to vote for him. I did not!

Well done, Bruce.

I remember the sonafabitch very clearly.
Mum used to daydream about a government aircraft carrying Whitlam crashing near to our place, just so she could deny him aid, as bitter revenge for the way he was treating the rural sector.

Such horrid thoughts she kept to herself. She was quite shocked to discover years later that nearly every housewife she knew had the same daydreams.

You must come up to Ottawa some day Paco so you can see a relaxed, slightly uninteresting, national capitol. And visit the house of Parliament to view the bullet holes.

No.
Way.

Who could have predicted that? Bet he'll be reported as a "white muslim".

It would be my privilege, Robert.

Muslim, eh? Go figure.

God rest the soul of that poor corporal.

Good article, though Jooolya still gets my vote as our worst PM ever.

Incidentally, Hal G P Colebatch has written a book about the sabotage carried out by Australian unions during WW2. It's called Australia's Secret War. For American readers it may serve to confirm stories that Dad or Grandad brought home...
