I wonder who on earth could be behind this act of violence

"12 people have died in an attack at the offices of a French satirical weekly, which angered some Muslims after publishing crude caricatures of Islam's Prophet Mohammed."

God rest their souls and comfort their families and friends.

Updates:

Lots of great coverage over at Ed Driscoll's blog; just hit it and keep scrolling.

Zombie invites us all to republish some of the controversial cartoons and otherr illustrations that have raised the not inconsiderable dander of hypersensitive musselmen. Here's one of my favorites:

And how about a reminder of western opposition to Islamic expansionism: Godfrey Enters Jerusalem, by Gustave Doré.

Claire Berlinski was there and did some great impromtu reporting.

Final update: Brilliant cartoon at Sean Linnane.

France was already waking up to the jihad threat. This just might put them over the top. I certainly hope so, and I hope B.O. and John "Looks French" Kerry are paying attention.

What to say? Devastating. All the polite diplomacy and ride-with empathy, all the 'fear of right wing backlash', so where is the backlash? Response only 'mourning' like tired old nursing home inmates resigned to fate. We've been saying 'it's on' since September 2001. Will those who must act listen now?

Someone on the TV here is suggesting flood the internet with every Charlie Hebdo cartoon you can find. Flood the internet and twitter with them, at least it's something we can do.

And still the MSM look for root causes and "provocation". Certainly something must make these totalitarians want to enforce their totality upon the world?

Well, yes, the root cause is islam.

It looks like they'll catch the perps. Instead of bringing back the guillotine, may I suggest that they be tried, found guilty, strangled with pig guts and buried in hogskins?

Just a thought. Might help prevent some similar stuff in the future.

You, sir, are a optimist extraordinaire! .

JXM: Why not? I believe that approach - or even just the threat of it - met with some success when American soldiers were fighting Muslim extremists in the Philippines around the turn of the last century.

Coincidentally, I've been thinking we need to help Mecca's rebuilding program. A sea of glass, what could be more chic and modern? This could be achieved quite economically.
