"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
O'Malley was willing to pay for a new stadium in Brooklyn, but Moses wouldn't let him.
ReplyDeleteSays it all, really.
(Just ordered a copy of The Power Broker. I'd never heard of Robert Moses, but I want to know how an unelected bureaucrat had NY mayors and governors dancing on a string for almost half a century.)
BTW, my grandfather was one of those Southern Californians overjoyed when the Dodgers moved to LA. He was originally from Kansas, but was a life-long fan. I don't know if he ever saw the Dodgers play at Ebbets Field, but I do know he had seen them play the Cardinals in St Louis many times.
ReplyDeleteSpiny: I'd like to read that book, too. I did read quite a bit about Robert Moses in another book (the name of which escapes me), and it was enough to convince me that way too much power had been placed in the hands of one unaccountable man.
