From the Dave Brubeck Quartet's classic Time Out album (1959), which features some fascinating and unusual time signatures, here's "Pick Up Sticks" (in 6/4 time). Smooth.

"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Dave Brubeck's brother Howard also wrote and performed music, having a later career in academia. In 1978 he retired as Dean of Humanities from Palomar College near San Diego and Dave, with the New Brubeck Quartet, performed a farewell concert in his honor. I took my kid brother to the concert and it was a wonderful experience. The lineup included Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan from the original quartet and also two of Dave's son's, Darius and Chris. They opened with Unsquare Dance, also performing Blue Rondo a la Turk and of course Take Five.
ReplyDeleteHuh. That was 44 years ago.
Oh, man, what a great experience that must have been!
ReplyDeleteI have pictures of my Dad, newly hired at IBM, wearing his Brubeck suit and black rim glasses, even though he didn't need glasses. From Brubeck he went to Herb Alpert and the TJB.
ReplyDeleteWow, Steve, that sounds like a great concert. My HS rock band used to play a rockified version of Take Five with loud guitar solos, I was rhythm guitar and still remember how to play it. We eventually went full 'jazz rock fusion', then broke up and went separate ways.
