Connie Clausen had a full and interesting life: circus performer, television writer, model, spokesperson for various consumer products, editor, literary agent. One very smart lady.
"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
It was much better at keeping the pounds off when it had cocaine. I tried to find when they dropped the coca leaves but it's vague. In 1904 they switched to "spent" coca leaves, a byproduct of the cocaine extraction process, which contained minimal amounts of cocaine. By 1929 there were no traces of cocaine in the formula.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, the inventor of Coke, John Pemberton, was a former Confederate colonel and an MD. He originally made the formula to help him deal with morphine addiction.
One very smart lady.
ReplyDeleteWell, other that liking Coca-Cola, perhaps. ;-)
Stephen: I didn't know the inventor was an ex-confederate officer. I suppose it's now racist to drink Coca-Cola, given the current woke ethos. Personally, I like, in descending order of preference, RC and Pepsi.
ReplyDeleteR-man: Remember, she was paid to like it.
R-man, maybe she didn't *LIKE* Coca-cola, she just was *PAID* to drink it, and *PRETEND* to like. Alas, we will never know the truth .....
ReplyDeleteThe old Coke formula was tastier and more satisfying, IMHO. And moderation was a commonly head value back then. So people weren't as likely to suck down a case of soda pop every day.
As for me, when I drink a soda (which is fairly rare these days), I try to avoid any colas, seeking out the diet versions of Dr. Pepper and/or Mountain Dew, or maybe an ice tea. Pepsi and Coca-Cola are both equally bad. Although, full disclosure, I used to drink a lot of Cocoa-Cola when I was a younger fool.
My grandmother used to say that my grandfather was addicted to Coca-Cola, and she always had it in her refrigerator. Since they were adults back during the time when Coca-Cola had cocaine in it, I sometimes wonder if she wasn't just exaggerating.
ReplyDeleteMyself, I prefer Pepsi to Coke, but I also like Dr. Pepper and Vernor's ginger ale. But alas, I can't really tolerate carbonated soft drinks very much anymore.
