  1. I live near a large lake spillway lined with slate and fossil rocks. I had a collection of them (little ones, nothing so large as that) until we moved. The Army Corps of Engineers administers the area, and now you have to have a permit to fossil-hunt there now.

    1. I never lived anywhere near fossils (that I know of, at any rate), but I did buy a trilobite fossil at a rock show in Chapel Hill when my fourth-grade class went on a field trip. I'm going to have to search through my stuff and see if I can find it.

You lived near Washington, DC. All kinds of fossils there, in Congress, the various federal agencies, and no doubt the NGOs.

  2. Completely off topic, Paco, but as you're the only Catholic with whom I regularly communicate I wonder what you think about this.

    1. I hope Pope Leo takes a more understanding view of the Latin Mass than his predecessor. The fact that the "liberals" in the church have tried so hard to eradicate it since Vatican II is one indication that it should be preserved. If, to take just one example, the Maronites can retain their unique liturgy and still remain under the umbrella of the Catholic Church, I see no justification for denying adherents of the Latin mass the same privilege. Mrs. Paco and I were members of a Latin mass church when we lived in Richmond, VA, and we find that form of the mass to be particularly effective in facilitating a feeling of reverence. I believe Vatican II made a key mistake in thinking that the mass had to be "dumbed down" and turned into something that is, frankly, banal and totally lacking in the old elegance.

  3. The FBI's ominous involvement in investigating traditionalist Catholics only strengthens my support of the Latin mass.

Incidentally, the church I used to attend was one of the FBI's targets, I believe.
