Woody Herman had a long career performing in several genres of jazz, but his organization started out in the 1930s billed as "The Band That Plays the Blues", and here's a prime example from 1939: "Blues Upstairs" (I really enjoy the bluesy, foot-draggin', full-ensemble march at the end).

ReplyDeleteRecord of the band that plays the blues, I mean?
Tony Joe White died. I loved that guy's music, starting with 'Poke Salad Annie' (50 yrs ago?) - his guitar work made it stand out and cool expressive vocals.
