The best way to remove a tick (H/T: Instapundit).
When I was a kid, we used to strike a match, blow it out, then hold the still-hot ember of the match head to the tick, which would usually make the thing fall out. Once, though, I used this method to get rid of a tick that turned out to be a mole. Hurt like hell. My friends got a big kick out of the episode, though. Unsympathetic little bastards.

Ok I learned something. I was told clockwise or counterclockwise (can't remember) but that must be a myth.
... or try to coax it out with heat. These methods rely on waiting for the tick to detach, instead it's best to remove the tick as quickly as possible.
I dunno, we used to heat up the tip of a small screwdriver and lay it on the tick's back. It didn't take the tick long to let go, and hit the road.
My family used matches or tweezers to detach. I don't remember if they were then popped or dunked. Popped is my recollection, because to most girls it would be gross.
