Australia: what a country!

Lucky family of treasure hunters dig up a fortune after finding two giant gold nuggets worth $350,000".

So, are those things just sort of lying around over there? Do you grumble when you have to keep pulling gold nuggets out of the ground in order to plant your cucumbers? Do you stub your toes on those big nuggets when you take the garbage out at night?

I'm surprised Shelob didn't have a giant lair near there to protect her gold.

Not in my part of the country, but that's an old gold rush town. It's the same as all these new discoveries of ancient treasure hoards in Europe - lots of metal detectorists everywhere now.

I just find old aboriginal tools every few years.

Civilian metal detectors have gotten a LOT better over the last few years.

I know of an old gold rush ghost town near here where there is probably lots to be found just below the surface, but unfortunately, it's in the San Bernardino National Forest, and except for a private horse ranch, it's federal government property and nothing is allowed to be removed from the site.

Not that this has stopped tourists from completely dismantling the remaining buildings for souvenirs over the 45 years since I first visited the place.

Large lumps of the stuff are still being found 150 years after the gold rush.
