This should be...stupid

So, Cheap Justice John Roberts, skittish fellow that he is, has declined to preside over the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump. Instead, the Grand Inquisitor will be one of the most partisan and one of the dumbest people in the Senate, Democrat Patrick Leahy, Vermont's other completely awful senator.

Update:  Maybe Trump should just go ahead and insist on trial by combat. I think he could take Leahy.

Update II:  Vermont's state motto is "Freedom and Unity". I guess the "Freedom" part of that went the way of "Roebuck" and "Sturm" in, respectively, "Sears & Roebuck" and "Sturm, Ruger".

Posing as a Constitutional Lawyer (hey, Obama did it!), Article I, Section 3 says:

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

So this is stupid in oh so many ways:

* Trump is no longer President, so an impeachment trial by the Senate would be nothing more entertainment for the masses, similar to Christians being thrown to the lions in ancient Rome.

* If Trump was President (and he ain't), Roberts is required to preside, and his absence makes the trial unconstitutional. Not that the donks care about that, but still .....

* Leahy is stupid. Yes, you said that, Paco. But it bears repeating.

This is just kabuki theater for the media and donk's voter base. At the expense of the credibility (which is already nearly zero) of the United States Congress.

At this point I am actually feeling sorry for Roberts. I don't know what made him go squishy, but he can't have much self regard left.

In an earlier time, the officers would withdraw from the mess, leaving Roberts alone with a bottle of whiskey and a revolver with one round.

JeffS, I'm more reminded of Athens and Themistocles.
He wasn't of the correct class and had the bad manners to keep winning so they tried him, with help from their rivals, the Spartans.

Funnily enough, they both put a hurtin' on the Persians.
