I guess this comes under the heading, "A for Effort"
I imagine this was a case of "desperate times require desperate measures". I hope the pilots eventually came to see, in retrospect, that they were lucky their scheme didn't work.
Limited range, low speed, lack of prior experience on the aircraft, no cold weather flying gear. Yeah, there was a certain lack of planning.
