Working-with-your-hands Wednesday

This is rather a long video considering that the resulting item is just a wooden post mounted on a rock, but there's a gizmo featured (starting at about the 9:08 mark) which I find fascinating: it permits you to convey the outline of the contour of the base onto the post so the post can be sawed for a more or less perfect fit.

Very neat work! I especially appreciated the brace bit and manual drill, those being what I used when Dad taught me how to use carpenter tools. I smiled when I saw him using the brace bit on the wood screws!

In fact, I still have those tools. Unused, of course. I'm saving them for the apocalypse ... ...

The gizmo is a tracing tool, a fascinating application of a pantograph. I don't recall seeing it before.

I've never seen anything like it, and it is fascinating: a relatively simple solution to an otherwise perplexing problem.
