There’s a tendency today to see Benito Mussolini as a pathetic sideshow, an incompetent blusterer who went from Adolf Hitler’s idol to his lapdog. Yet in many ways, Mussolini’s notion of fascism has become increasingly dominant in much of the world, albeit in an unexpected form: in the worldview of those progressives who typically see “proto-fascism” lurking on the Right.

For right now, of course, the Democrats don't have an actual Mussolini figure whom the masses can be beguiled into adoring, and who can serve to personalize the Fascist doctrine. I mean, here's Mussolini...

Of course, it's quite possible our fashionable Fascists don't really need a "leader",  genuine or nominal. They are working tirelessly on so many fronts - in government, the news media, the entertainment industry, social media -  that society is likely to be overwhelmed by an army of mostly nameless and faceless ideologically-driven ants, all acting according to a strategy that is largely instinctive. So, perhaps patriots don't need a supreme leader, either; just the equivalent of political AMDRO - i.e., an alarmed, activist and indefatigable population of the sane.
