China isn't the only place. There are some here who still practice a Native ceremony in which a dog is sacrificed and eaten. A friend went to one, and said the dog passed peacefully.
I don't agree with eating dogs, cats, horses, baby seals for any reason.
There are two approved purposes for dogs: hunting, and herding cattle. Dogs, and other "unclean" animals cannot be inside a house. Problems solved. Designate the dog(s) for one of the two approved purposes. Build an enclosure adjacent to the house, but not attached. For apartment dwellers, put Fluffy on the patio or balcony.
I don't trust people who don't like dogs. Dogs are generally good judges of human character, and they do know when people don't like them.
