Under a Paco administration, the Chinese balloon, whatever its purpose, would look like this in short order.

Tonight, I heard a Air Force general give the most ass-tounding reason for not destroying the balloon. He said, 'it's destruction would pose a risk to people on the ground'.. So in-other-words, move along, nothing to see. Never mind the eye in the sky; it's just doing harmless research.
This guy sure is working hard' for another star. I don't remember whether it on was on Jesse Watters, Tucker Carlson, or WSJ (Wall Street Journal).

Dropping that balloon into a rural area with minimum risk to people should be a no brainer. Balloons that loose their buoyancy suddenly drop like a rock, with only a little drift, easily estimated. Ask any science class that deploys a small balloon (those tend to have Amateur Radio tracking equipment on them, and I've followed a few of them directly).
And if you've ever driven through Montana, you would know that its population density is LOW. Even including the major cities.
No, I bet the reason is (a) their Chinese masters disapprove; (b) they don't want to deal with the bureaucratic nightmare AFTER the balloon lands; (c) Montana residents won't take kindly to OGUS tromping around; (d) they are risk averse in all areas (what Deborah said); or (e) some combination of the above.
Someone in another comment thread suggested that a balloon that big (or several if the Chinese decide to "lose control" of others) could be used to carry an EMP weapon. No doubt they're testing wind patterns over the continent.
Someone else brought up the Japanese balloon bombs in 1945 that killed five people in Oregon. I'm also reminded of the Palestinian fire balloons they used to send into Israel to start forest fires.

Now they're talking about taking it down so it falls in the ocean. If it goes down off of NC, maybe it will take care of Paco's shark problem.
Rebecca, I'm fairly confident that the Chinese had a significant degree of control over that balloon. Meteorologists have a good handle on wind patterns, which are more understood than people realize.
