My younger brother (by two years) passed away yesterday evening after a year-long battle with cancer. He had beaten prostate cancer, but was later afflicted with squamous cell cancer that started in his cheek and worked its way into his jaw. He received treatment, up to and including surgery, but the cancer cells managed to get into his lymph nodes, and thence to his lungs and eventually his brain. Mrs. Paco and I visited him a few weeks ago, and he was in an extremely weakened state; however, he maintained a fighting spirit and good humor, and when the end came, he went easy.
Although he was a bit of a renegade in his youth, Bro Paco joined the USMC straight out of high school. After his hitch was up, he worked for awhile in the family business (the Alcart garbage company - "Satisfaction guaranteed or double your trash back"), and went on to found a company that specialized in selling mulch, stone and other landscaping materials. He joined the North Carolina National Guard when he was in his late 30s, and had to actually lobby to be sent to Iraq during the first Gulf War, where he served in the personal security detail of his unit's commanding general, coming under fire numerous times, and surviving an IED that, fortunately, had been poorly positioned, resulting in an explosion that knocked the vehicle on its side but resulted in no severe casualties.
He was loyal to God, country and, above all, his family. God rest his soul, and console his family and many friends.
Ah, my condolences to you and your family, Paco. We are blessed that such men lived.
ReplyDeleteI will remember him in my intentions at Mass this afternoon. He sounded like a slightly more expressive version of you. Ooorah!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss, Paco. Not that he needs my prayers, but he will have them anyway. All I can add is love your family more and don't be afraid to express that love.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss. He sounds like he was a kick ass mofo. In a very good way.
ReplyDeleteSorry Paco.
ReplyDeleteThat sucks.
The world is a little worse today.
My condolences, Paco.
ReplyDeleteLooking at his picture, it strikes me that he had a strong resemblance to R. Lee Ermey. And it sounds like he may have had a bit of the same larger-than-life persona as Gunny. Not a bad thing.
My condolences to you and yours, Paco. Your brother lived a full life, from your description here.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear this Paco. It sounds like he was one of the good ones. I agree with Rinardman, he does look like th Gunny in Full Metal Jacket.
ReplyDeleteEspecially sad to lose a younger family member, and that is a very good obituary.
ReplyDeleteMy sincere condolences. May he rest in peace. (And yes, he does look a bit like R. Lee, which makes me wonder if Paco looks like Chuck Norris.)
ReplyDeleteI am very sorry for your loss. May your brother's memory be for a blessing.
ReplyDeleteOur sincere condolences to you and your family. Our thoughts and prayers go with you.
ReplyDeleteDeep sympathies to you and the family, Paco. Joseph was a heck of a man. May God rest him in peace, and give comfort by his memory. Thoughts and prayers for all.
