"Aloha" and the public's right to know

"Lahaina censorship".

There is, apparently, a long history of officials withholding information in the spirit of “aloha.” Often this means that reporters are expected to cover things up, and as a general matter, they do. We all think of Hawaii as an island paradise, but it is also quite corrupt and run by, as we have seen, a bunch of incompetents.

  1. Yes I got that impression when I started to look into Hawaii reality beyond the tourism hype.

BTW, there's a story going round that the way some dwellings or vegetation were left untouched while those next door 'burnt down to the slab' is unusual. Even 'experts' are pushing this. But it's nonsense.

That is exactly what wildfires do. I live in a bushfire prone area, and for some years was engaged studying individual property histories here, with some histories extending through periods of bushfire devastation and rebuilding. Some houses (etc) are destroyed while right next door buildings may be untouched. It happens every time.
