A new wrinkle in the "should you carry with a round in the chamber or not?" argument

"Woman enters MRI machine with a gun and gets shot in the butt".

  1. This is where "trust but verify" should have come into play. Does the Technician ask every patient, or was this one suspect. I wonder which type of handgun she was packing, and the damage to the very expensive machine.

  2. "Trust but verify", yes, but mayhaps a bit of explanation to those who aren't adept in physics. Like "If you don't want to be shot, disarm now, 'cuz this machine ain't gun friendly."

I've read of this before, a police officer who was in the same room when an MRI was turned on. It grabbed his pistol out of the holster, and went off when it hit the machine. The odd thing was, the slide didn't move, and the case didn't eject when the weapon discharged. Clearly, the firing pin and/or spring was moved hard enough to ignite the primer. Exactly how? An interesting problem ....

  3. Important safety tip: the M in MRI stands for Magnetic.
