Gaston Glock, RIP

The founder of one of the world's most prolific manufacturers of semi-automatic pistols, Gaston Glock, has passed away at age 94.

For years, I ignored Glock pistols, never had any interest in buying one - mainly because they struck me as being kind of ugly. I finally broke down and bought a Glock 23 several years ago; it's a nice battlefield green, and, unlike many other manufacturers, Glock is not stingy with its magazines (the pistol came with three). The gun is accurate, extremely reliable, and just plain durable. I followed up with the Glock 19X, the civilian version of the pistol Glock had submitted, unsuccessfully, for military trials when the Army was looking to replace the Beretta. It's a beautiful tan ("coyote"), and also came with three magazines. It's 100% reliable.

  1. I have a Glock 21, in .45 ACP. I like having 13 rounds in the magazine, and like nearly all Glocks it's reliable, if not as sexy as the classic 1911.

For what it's worth I also have two 1911s, so I can't really be pigeonholed into either category as a fanboy I suppose. Most recently I picked up a SAR K2 in .45 as well. And that pistol really provokes an identity crisis - as a CZ75 based design it ought to place me among the gun hipsters, but the caliber makes me a boomer fudd.

  2. I have an EAA Witness, made by Tanfolglio in Italy. It's a CZ 75 clone chambered in .38 Super. All steel, rugged, indestructible, never, ever had a jam.

  3. A buddy gunsplained that most guns are designed and made by gunsmiths, Glocks are designed by engineers.
I've only fired one Glock, it was smooth but...
I prefer Sigs and, of course, the holy 1911.
I like new guns, but I don't need any more scary, black pistols.
As an aside, I got a Remington 870DM, cheap.
Found out it was cheap because they weren't making mags anymore.
Then I found a place that has factory mags.
    Now I have 6 mags.
    Happy, happy, joy, joy.

  4. V: Oh, so you finally got your Remington with the detachable magazines! Good for you. I didn't know they had stopped making them.

I saw a Savage model 99 for sale online. I'd love to have one of those, but I'll probably pass this time.

  5. Yeah, I'm pretty happy.
I like Remingtons and I'm very used to them, I got an 870 20 gauge, since sold. when I was 14.
I have to think about the various controls on a Mossberg.
I'm ambivalent about not getting the Mossberg version.
Larger capacity mags and I think you could swap out for a 590 barrel.
    So a mag-fed, 12 gauge with a bayonet.

  6. I'm so old that I remember back in the day a NYC Police Commissioner said of the "plastic" Glock: "No self respecting police officer would carry one of them".

  7. "That punk pulled a Glock 7 on me. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Doesn't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month."

That line is so wrong that I always wonder if it is a deliberate goof. Only a journalist is so stupid as to make a statement so full or error. Glocks, of course, are polymer, not porcelain. There is no "Glock 7." They are not made in Germany. And finally, they do show up on both X-ray machines and metal detectors.

Oh, and finally, Glocks are pretty affordable. Anyway I would like to know the story of how that was written, and if it's somebody who knows what he's talking about winking at others who do too.
