And now, a word from our sponsor

  1. Must have been a wild almanac ... ... a "dream and fate book" graced with a cover showing an owl sitting on the moon with a woman?!?!?!?!

Mayhaps it was the 1886 version of Mad Magazine?

  2. You got me, Paco. I had never heard of 'Gargling Oil', so I had to find out. My assumption it was a mouthwash was a bit off.

Merchant's Gargling Oil: America's oldest, time tried liniment. Recommended by us in the treatment of galls, sprains, callous, wind galls, scratches, mange, flesh wounds, muscular soreness, kicks, cuts, foot rot in sheep, wind puffs.

Okay, now I'm starting to feel like Alice.

    Callous: variant spelling of callus.
Wind galls: a soft tumor or synovial swelling on a horse's leg in the region of the fetlock joint.
Wind puffs: soft, fluid-filled swellings that can develop around a horse's fetlock joint, typically affecting the lower legs.

So much new knowledge, I'm overwhelmed. :-)

  3. Wait. You're supposed to rub this stuff on? Not gargle with it? No wonder it tastes like crap.
