Prepare to board!

Glenn Reynolds discusses the revived interest in letters of marque: "Let's Go Privateering!"

Well, now might be the time to take the Jolly Codger out of mothballs!

Hmm. A little time in drydock may be necessary to get her seaworthy.

  1. I had that idea a long time ago. Get a cheap freighter, hire a bunch of Marines, go to Yemen to stock up on Russian weaponry then charge $1 million a pop for an AK. Charge extra for a PKM or RPG, look around for a French 75 and charge big bucks for shooting that.
Sail around the Horn of Africa.
    $Profit!

    1. Exactly. Some years back I had a law school friend who represented a decommissioned WWII destroyer. With some difficulty he managed to get it berthed somewhere and turned into a museum, but I kept telling him at the time that he should get it refurbished and put to sea. Instead of lounging on Royal Caribbean, guys like us would pay top dollar to cruise the Somali coast taking care of business, and pay a premium for a turn on the .50 caliber.

  2. A little glue and a Jolly Roger and she’ll be right as rain.

  3. I went to school with a guy who had a boat and was a wreck diver/treasure hunter, I bet he'd go for the privateer/pirating life.
