Churchill once suggested that the traditions of the Navy were "rum, sodomy and the lash"

 And drag shows. Don't forget drag shows.

    I do get rum, but not the sodomy or the lash.

Sodomy was apparently once fairly common in the age of fighting sail (even though punishable by death in the 18th century), and the lash is a reference to one of the typical punishments handed out aboard ships. It is important to know the context of Churchill's comment : "According to 'an ear-witness', he was having trouble with some of his admirals at a strategy meeting. One of them accused him of having impugned the traditions of the Royal Navy, provoking the reply: 'And what are they? They are rum, sodomy and the lash'."
