DeleteSodomy was apparently once fairly common in the age of fighting sail (even though punishable by death in the 18th century), and the lash is a reference to one of the typical punishments handed out aboard ships. It is important to know the context of Churchill's comment : "According to 'an ear-witness', he was having trouble with some of his admirals at a strategy meeting. One of them accused him of having impugned the traditions of the Royal Navy, provoking the reply: 'And what are they? They are rum, sodomy and the lash'."
