Almost like getting a new gun

I have a S&W model 58 that I picked up about a dozen years ago. Chambered in .41 Magnum, it's from the company's "Classics" series (re-released handguns of contemporary manufacture that honor the great guns of the company's past).

This one had a barrel that wasn't clocked right at the factory: it was over-torqued and the front sight didn't properly line up with the rear notch sight; also, the tip of the ejection rod didn't fully seat because the under-barrel lug naturally didn't line up, either. I procrastinated for years about sending it back to be fixed, having read some bad press on the repair times. Recently, though, I found out about a local gunsmith, and he agreed to look at it. Because it was over-torqued, he didn't feel comfortable trying to straighten it out, so he sent it to S&W, and, much to my relief, it came back three weeks later and I picked it up yesterday. The barrel is now as it should be, and the thing shoots really well.

She's a beauty.

Really pretty grips...

  1. Sweet! .41 mag ammo is a bit tedious to find, but it's a good caliber. I had one once (won it in a raffle), but I sold it, my interest in revolvers being very limited.

  2. Nice. That is like getting a new gun.
3 weeks to send to S&W? That's great.
I took my .500 to a gunsmith in Mesa. It took months just to make sure the cylinder was aligned proprely and check the timing. It was cheap enough, mybe $100 or so.
I kept seeing vids of 500s going boom the wrong way and I bought it used 20 yesrs ago.

    1. Man, a .500 going boom the right way can be dangerous.

  3. I meant to ask, is your Colt as smooth in single action as that S&W?

    1. That's a good question, but I couldn't say off the top of my head. I'll try to do some comparison shooting and see.

    2. Now, see what you've done, V. You have forced...forced, I say....Paco into going to the range and shooting two of his guns just because of your idle curiosity.

Poor Paco! I hope he can recover from this burden.
