Open thread

I’m going to be offline for a day or two, so here are a few conversation starters to get my faithful commenters revved up.

1) Vegemite seems to be a hot topic. Answer me this: are there any known health benefits associated with this, er, food product? Conversely, are there any known health hazards?

2) Everybody into the Paco Enterprises pool! What date (might as well include the year) do you think Obama will roll out his final decision on our strategy in Afghanistan? I’m thinking Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

3) I saw the first episode of the miniseries, V. As everyone knows, it’s ostensibly a remake of the previous series that ran way back when. But is it also a not-so-subtle attack on the Obama administration? The lizard lady’s offer of universal health care, plus her bullying of the TV reporter and the acquisition by the invaders of a cult-like following, seem to suggest that it is (also there’s the fact that I have never seen any of the actors before; naturally, the A-list Hollywood folks wouldn’t want to be associated with a project that had anti-Obama overtones).

4) How ‘bout them Yankees! Congratulations, boys!

  1. The health benefits of vegemite are that, since it goes through you like, er, grease through a goose and carries all before it, toxins from other food products don't have time to get into your bloodstream...

  2. Excellent! Donuts and steak with a Vegemite chaser, I like it!

  3. (1) Health benefits of Vegemite: It apparently makes Australians want to drink. Health hazards: Can't really say, but I do note that the rash is almost gone.

    (2) "Final" strategy? How about the twelfth of never?

    (3) Actually, although the remake does update some things to make it relevant to today's audience, the business about the cult of personality, health care (cancer cure), and the suborning of the media were all present in the cheesy 80s original. It's only more controversial now because... well, because of Obama and our criminal Congress.

As for the actors, I guess you have to be a dedicated scifi TV viewer/gossiper like myself to be able to identify some of them. For instance, Joel Gresch, who plays the young priest, is William Shatner's son-in-law, and was the star of a scifi show called "The 4400". Morena Baccarin, who plays the chief Visitor, starred in the series "Firefly", and the movie "Serenity". The actors aren't Big Names, but they're not exactly unknown either.

  5. Vegemite is a good source of Vitamin B.

For Rebecca, it's not vegemite that makes us want to drink. We just like to drink!

  7. 1) Vegemite thickly smeared on toast is a superb breakfast for the morning after the night before - that and a black aspirin (can of coke)

In Australia, we cut our teeth with vegemite - on our sandwiches and toast - even stirred into a cup of boiling water. Nice on toast with a fried egg on top as well.

And vegemite and crisp lettuce sandwiches (prefereably white bread) are a delicacy

    2) 31st of September, 2011 (yes I know)

    3) Didn't watch it, but the lead actress from the original V dated Simon Poidevan, a former Australian Rugby Player (Wallabies). And no douybt, Poido was brought up on vegemite.

    4) Yankees - do they play baseball or gridiron?

And Party at Paco's, or is he just offline and not away.....

  9. Vegemite is perfect for unmasking fake Australians. If someone with an aussie accent arrives at Paco HQ one day with a desire to "throw a prawn on the barbie", you can check their authenticity by serving them a vegemite sandwich.

If they ask for a second one, they are in the clear. If they gag, vomit, spit or choke, it's into the piranha filled dungeons.

  10. It's a well known fact that Vegemite is very good for your health. By exciting the deliciousness buds in the mouth, and activating the tasty and delectable enzymes, it sets off a catalytic process whereby the vital yummascrumma protein is delivered to all parts of the body. Also, Vegemite is a good source of Vitamin F (short for F*methatsgoodstuffaniline).
