Australia Gets First Saint

Mary MacKillop to be confirmed as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI.

She fought the church hierarchy and was even excommunicated for a while. Interesting how many Catholic saints have a similar background.

(Non-Catholics imagine that Galileo is a lone example of opposition to the hierarchy. In fact the degree to which the Church honours its rebels is surprising).

The number of saints who bucked the system is astounding. Notice that it's the Church that comes around, not the person knuckling under to the hierarchy.

As a show of devotion to her cause and her life, I've decided to take St. Mary MacKillop as my personal saint. No, I'm not Catholic...does it matter?

Prairie Cat. The next time you're in Sydney you could visit your own personal Saint and pray at her tomb.

It's a beautiful little Church and has a most profound atmosphere.
