Richard McEnroe (Three Beers Later blog & poster here) and I rode with our fellow vets from American Legion Post 826 in the 100th Anniversary of Canoga Park, California. We had vets from various eras including two WWII vets. The one who we invited to ride with us was on the first boat in at Iwo Jima. He was 19 years old. The other is the acclaimed author of "50 Days of War and Peace. Why Harry Truman Dropped The Bomb". Ed's book is in the Library of Congress, as well as most of the major military museums in the US, and some overseas.

There were three WWII vets who walked the entire route, shaking hands with along the way. They were wearing their uniforms! Amazing!

The parade featured a fly over of WWII aircraft. The missing man was especially poignant for me since my sister called that morning to say that her nephew Martin was killed in Afghanistan. Martin was Special Ops, and died loving what he did for this country. I got a chance to meet him at Christmas, along with his wife and infant son. His wit, warmth, and dedication to his family was wonderful. He was the kind of guy you'd like to spend time with. God bless Martin, and all that have given all.

I'm very sorry to hear about your sister's nephew. Young people like that are one of the few reasons I'm able to maintain at least a sliver of optimism about our nation's future.
