Wow, magic.
I'm in awe of this guys skill.
That lighter looks to be beautifully engineered and well worth restoring.

My dad was very handy at this sort of thing; built boats in the garage as a hobby and had a well equipped workshop. He'd love this video.

It's amazing, isn't it? I wish I had the knowledge and skill to do something like that.

What kind of boats did did your dad build? That sounds like a great hobby.

Around 1960 dad built a motor launch in our garage(about 22 foot guestimate); it had a big internal engine and was quite racy.

Later, dad built a Heron sailing dinghy(when he first separated from my mother in the early 60s) and presented it to me for Christmas one year. There was a bag containing sails under the tree with my name on it; I was quite confused until dad told me the rest of the present was in the garage downstairs. He must have sneaked it into the garage late at night on Christmas eve.
I joined a local sailing club and raced it for several seasons.

A talented man and, obviously, a great father.

My father had some talent, too, in building things. When my brother and I were young, Old Paco built us a very nice tree house with a door, two windows with shutters, a shingled roof, and a small porch. He did it with (extremely minimal) help from my brother and me (I was eight, I think, and my brother was six). He built the thing in early spring, among some pine trees, and I still remember the smell of the fresh-cut wood, and the scent of pine straw soaking up the sunshine. Happy days.

Sounds like your dad was no slouch when it came to looking after the kids.

Ah, memories of youth.
They were wonderful days.

I used to walk past this guy's garage a lot and saw him building a boat inside.
It was beautiful but when he was nearing completion, I noticed a problem involving size of the boat and size of the exit.
I never found out what happened as we moved away, but I always wonder how he got that boat out.

Probably sprayed it with Shrinkoleum.

Very nice! I'm impressed by the improvisation in the video.

Dad was a carpenter by hobby and a putterer by nature. He liked building just about anything out of wood, which he learned from his father. But nothing extravagant or large -- stools, toys, small bookcases, that sort of thing. He did refinish old furniture salvaged from an abandoned farmhouse pace.
