I guess I can't complain too much about the cold

I mean, it's warm enough here in Southport, NC for certain varieties of palm trees, at least (mostly cabbage and pindo). Get a load of these ice-encrusted houses on Lake Erie.

  1. Every year about this time the opening lyrics to Jimmy Buffett's "Manana" keep running through my head:

She said I can't go back to America soon
It's so Goddamn cold it's gonna snow until June
They're freezing up in Buffalo, stuck in their cars
And I'm lying here 'neath the sun and the stars.

  2. I was watching a news report on the Big Freeze, and when they switched to Buffalo, all I saw was a white screen. For a moment, I thought something was wrong with the broadcast transmission or my set, but, no, it was just an all-out blizzard that obscured absolutely everything. I don't know how those people live up there (sadly, not all of them do; I heard a story about a woman who froze to death in her car, and I'm pretty sure that was in Buffalo).

  3. I don't know why people live in Buffalo. What is there?

I live in California, I know what you're going to say, but we have stuff here! Agriculture, logging, oil, all the stuff! We need one million Paco followers to invade this rich land and slaughter this weakass pissant "government."

I can't do this on my own.

And no, I'm not going to retreat to Texas.

  4. Ice covered houses in winter aren't all that unusual for the Great Lakes lakeside communities. It has a lot to do with the foam that blows off the lakes and freezes.

Around here we got a couple of inches of the white stuff, but the wind blew it into deep drifts in places, and the roads were treacherous. That's our usual winter except for the extreme arctic temperatures. We stayed snug and warm indoors and rode it out.
