This is, without a doubt, the weirdest thing I've heard of since we moved to Brunswick County. Here is an announcement that appeared on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page:
"The following message was forwarded to the Sheriff’s Office this afternoon. Sounds bizarre, but evidently this has been happening to Volvo drivers when traveling down HWY 211 towards Midway Road."
There is a spot on 211 near Midway (almost in front of the funeral home) that apparently people traveling in Volvos are having the same experience I did twice. I called the dealership and they said Volvo is looking into it as they have received many calls.
I was traveling toward Midway and all of a sudden my brakes seized and my seatbelt choked me. It’s as if my car was keeping me from an accident. It was a clear day and I was not close to another car at all. I figured maybe someone crossed the line and I just didn’t see them. THEN….two days later I was traveling the same direction and the same thing happened.
Parkway Volvo said they have received numerous calls on the subject. Same location. (As if a sensor is somewhere nearby)
I wanted to make sure you knew as it seems dangerous. I was happy no one was behind me both times. My car literally stopped and scooted w/the anti-lock.
I hope this helps and I hope this prevents an accident. Please let me know if you need more information from me. Otherwise, it sounds like Parkway Volvo has taken it to Volvo corp.”
"Be safe out there!"
Hmmm. It happens near...the funeral home. Mwahahahaha!!!

Gremlins, maybe?
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that popped into my mind was a cartoonish image of the mortician in the basement having fun with some kind of hacking device that only affects Volvos.
ReplyDeleteAn old friend was a Saab fanboy for many years. He had one of those quirky 99s, with the ignition slot on the tunnel between the front seats. Since Volvo used to advertise that they were "the safest car in Sweden," I used to say that meant Saab was the most dangerous one.
ReplyDeleteI was always sorry that they didn't do that in their advertising. I think most Saab owners would have lapped it up.
I had a 99l, loved that car.
ReplyDeleteAll Saabs had the ignition slot between the seats, I'm not sure when they stopped, but I bet Saab owners were upset.
And yes, behind every Saab owner is a sob story.
That 99l was mostly rust and Radio Shack when it finally broke in two.
Still, I kind of liked the Saab's styling.
ReplyDeleteSemi trucks have automatic braking systems now. There you are, taking a curve, safe as houses, when your brakes decide you're going too fast, apply themselves and almost throw you into the ditch. It's one of the smaller reasons I quit.
ReplyDeleteGeorge: I didn't know that. I can see how it might be...problematic.
ReplyDeleteUntil my car can drive while sit in the back having cocktails, I don't want any 'help'.
ReplyDeleteI don't even like ABS and my car has an offswitch for traction control.
