    Interestingly, official positions in the Roman Republic were unpaid. They were civic duty. Of course, it was expected that the occupant would take advantages of the many opportunities for self enrichment while in office.

  4. Funny you mention Crassus. At one time he was the wealthiest citizen of Rome. He got that way by buying up proscribed properties during Sulla's dictatorship on the cheap. Helped I guess that he was able to get advance notification of who was going on the lists.

    Kinda reminds me of the claims that speculators descended upon Maui after the fires trying to snap up burned out properties. That's the sort of thing that can lead to conspiracy theories. Thing is, these days I don't automatically dismiss conspiracy theories any more. I just say "Huh, that would be something, wouldn't it?" and file it away for future reference.
