Here's the thing about mistakes

You not only learn from them, they help you to maintain an appropriate level of humility.

One of my biggest mistakes was thinking, back in the day, that Paul Ryan was a common-sensical, honest politician. As it turns out, he has been a huge disappointment: "Paul Ryan Bashes Trump and ‘Trump Populism,’ Says It’s Now the ‘Establishment’".

As friend and commenter Veeshir says, when you find yourself truly liking a politician, that's when you know you're being conned.

  1. ... a school of thought that is isolationist, that is pro-Putin, pro-Russia, pro-tyranny at the end of the day, and that is extremely dangerous for all democracy ....

Do you suppose Ryan, like so many other Republicans we thought we could trust, are pushing the Dems' "Russia, Russia, Russia" line because they're trying to distract from all the Chinese money they're raking in?

  3. He talks about being deeply motivated by his Catholicism and Thomas Aquinas.

So, when he says he fears US isolationism and walking away from NATO, I think he's one of those who are gung-ho for defending the Catholic West (like Poland) against the Orthodox East - Russia. And that's probably a major red line for him - if he's sincere.

It does not help that Eastern Orthodox see it all as a conspiracy against them too, and believe the west can not be trusted 'ever since the Crusaders sacked Constantinople'.

With the global threat from Islam, it really is sad that Christians of east and west face this division, when we have such a need to be united.
